Two changes to Bok squad

South Africa will field two changes to their team to face the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations rugby Test at Jade Stadium in Christchurch on Saturday. A broken nose suffered against the Pacific Islanders in the 38-24 win at Gosford in New South Wales last Saturday has ruled lock Gerrie Britz out of contention and his place goes to Albert van den Berg.

Armstrong proves point to pull on yellow jersey

Lance Armstrong took another step towards an historic sixth yellow jersey on the Tour de France on Tuesday with an exciting, if unfamiliar, winning sprint which handed him the yellow jersey. Armstrong put his largely unseen sprint qualities on show to win the 15th stage held over 180,5km between Valreas and Villard-de-Lans ahead of Italian Ivan Basso.

Flight confusion for Supersport United

The unavailability of direct flights to Algiers, Algeria has forced Supersport United to leave in two separate groups for their crucial African Champions League match against USM Alger on Friday night. The first group of United players and senior officials left for the North African country on Monday night and the second one departed on Tuesday night.

Will Pirates face Chiefs?

The absence of Orlando Pirates in last year’s Telkom Charity Cup competition killed the thrill of the one-day event. But the Buccaneers are certain of participation in this year’s event and a derby against historic rivals Kaizer Chiefs could wipe out those sad memories. And the early 1980s in South Africa were also a very long time ago if you consider what was — not just socially, but legally — due to women.

Electricity crisis worsens in Rwanda

In recent months, Rwanda has experienced long, daily power cuts because of electricity rationing. This began after two of the country’s hydroelectric plants, Ntaruka and Mukunga, which are responsible for providing half of Rwanda’s power, experienced drops in yield. Butcheries, delicatessens and fishmongers and beauty salons are among the businesses that have been most seriously affected.

The poor and the poorest

New research by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) has shown that 57% of South Africans are living below the poverty line of R1 290 a month for a family of four. And the ”poverty gap”, which measures the required income transfer to all poor households to lift them from poverty, grew from R56-billion in 1996 to R81-billion in 2001.

India dismiss Bangladesh in Asia Cup

Left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan and Sachin Tendulkar snared three wickets each on Wednesday to help India dismiss Bangladesh for 177 runs in the first match of the cricket Asia Cup second round. Electing to field first after winning the toss, India took immediate control of the match, claiming two wickets before the runs total passed 10 runs.

Leopards sign Matshitse

Black Leopards have started preparing themselves for the 2004/05 season by signing defender Peter Matshitse. The well-travelled Matshitse has signed a two-year contract with the Limpopo side who are under the watchful eye of former Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba.
