Eastern Cape finance minister Enoch Godongwana was fired on Monday, Premier Nosimo Balindlela’s office said.
Spokesperson Masiza Mazizi said MPL Billy Nel will occupy Godongwana’s position and will be sworn in on Tuesday.
”Both the suspension of the finance superintendent general, Monde Tom, and Godongwana’s dismissal come after a probe into financial irregularities in that department. The executive committee made the decision to fire Godongwana last week,” he said.
Godongwana said he respects Balindlela’s decision and will in no way challenge it.
”All I will be is a backbencher in the legislature. It is totally up to the premier to do as she sees fit.
”After all, she is accountable to the people if she sees there is no good service delivery in my department,” Godongwana said. — Sapa
