Cofimvaba hospital near Umtata is in financial crisis, with patients being fed mostly on dry rice and eggs and staff often arriving at work drunk, an investigation by the provincial health portfolio committee has found. Committee chairperson Mzukisi Mpahlwa said the hospital would run out of money within a month.

Eastern Cape finance minister Enoch Godongwana was fired on Monday, Premier Nosimo Balindlela’s office said. ”Both the suspension of the finance superintendent general, Monde Tom, and Godongwana’s dismissal come after a probe into financial irregularities in that department,” a spokesperson said.
A district surgeon testifying in the trial of the four alleged murderers of Mdantsane pupil Lydia Mankwente described to the Bisho High Court on Tuesday the injuries sustained by Mankwente during the alleged attack.

Seven Eastern Cape government officials and a policeman appeared in Umtata and East London courts on Thursday after they were arrested in connection with fraud, theft and corruption.
The Eastern Cape government scoffed on Thursday at a report alleging widespread corruption in the province, claiming the findings by Public Service Accountability Monitor were ”malicious and irresponsible”.
