Seven Eastern Cape government officials and a policeman appeared in Umtata and East London courts on Thursday after they were arrested in connection with fraud, theft and corruption.
The eight were arrested at their homes in Umtata and East London during raids by a joint anti-corruption task team in various parts of the province early on Thursday. The team comprised members from the SA Police Services, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the elite Scorpions unit.
Provincial police representative Captain Deon Zeelie said seven of the accused appeared in the Umtata Magistrate’s Court. Five of them were released on bail of R2 000 each, while two were released on a warning.
The eighth suspect appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court and was also released on a warning. The accused are Nusician Ngwenta (43) Nozibele Ketwa (40) Noluthando Njovane (40) Inspector Nkosinathi Ncapawi (43) Naledi Poswa (28) Nondumiso Buya (50) Thenjiwe Tilese, and Ntombomzi Sumanifa (40). – Sapa
