Pakistan crash to record low

Pakistan opened their Asia Cup super league campaign on a disastrous note when they crashed to their lowest-to-date total of 122 against Sri Lanka at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. All-rounder Abdul Razzaq top-scored with 43, but Pakistan still fell below their previous lowest of 131 against Sri Lanka.

South African rugby bosses on Wednesday insisted a player contract row was not a distraction ahead of their opening Tri-Nations rugby test against the All Blacks here on Saturday. White was doing his utmost to put the dispute raging between the South African Rugby Union and the South African Players Association into the background this week.

Young pro golfer sticks to his game plan

Two years ago, Ernie Els sat down with young black golfer James Kamte and the world number two gave him a very definite plan for his career. Kamte arrived at the Lost City Golf Club on Tuesday for this week’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour at Sun City with everything indicating Els’ words are still the blueprint for his fledgling career.

Cox on the ball in China

South Africa’s cycling team leader, Ryan Cox, has moved up to fifth overall following the fourth stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China on Tuesday. Cox is still suffering from a stomach problem but he is only seconds off the lead. In fact, the first 10 riders in the tour are only separated by 40 seconds.

Eritrean children live in extreme poverty

Hundreds of thousands of Eritrean children are living in extreme poverty due to prolonged drought, the aftermath of border conflict with neighbouring Ethiopia and its impact on the country’s economy, according the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). An estimated 425 000 children under 14 years of age are affected.

DA: Bolder approach needed for Coega

The government should be bolder in its approach to making South Africa’s flagship industrial initiative at Coega in the Eastern Cape a ”sure thing”, the Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday. The area is currently defined as an industrial development zone, but the DA said it should be defined as an export processing zone.

Last Stander gang member up for parole

The last surviving member of the infamous 1980s Stander gang will appear before a parole board shortly for consideration of his possible release from jail. Allan Heyl (52) was a member of the Stander gang, led by former police captain Andre Stander, that committed a string of robberies in and around Johannesburg in 1983 and 1984.

Radical Nigerian Muslims still oppose polio vaccine

A radical Muslim group that triggered panic over polio immunisation in northern Nigeria said on Tuesday it remains opposed to the vaccine, despite it being passed as safe by a hardline state government. Polio vaccination was suspended in Kano state last year after claims that the drugs had been laced with chemicals to make African girls infertile.
