AmaGlug-Glug beat Algeria at home

South Africa’s doomed campaign for the Olympic Games in Athens in August ended on Friday when AmaGlug-Glug narrowly beat Algeria 1-0 at Blida Stadium in Algiers. The first half was a boring affair and the local kids, who gained free entrance, chose to entertain themselves by beating drums on the grand stands.

New Zealand all out

South Africa hurried New Zealand out for 297 and reached 49-0 by lunch on the second day of the third cricket Test at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. Shaun Pollock took two wickets and Nicky Boje and Andre Nel one each as the Proteas took only 14 overs to end New Zealand’s first innings after their resumption at 248-6.

Banyana Banyana match postponed

The Olympic qualifier match between the Nigeria national women’s soccer team, the Super Falcons, and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, scheduled to take place in Abuja on Friday afternoon, has been postponed to Sunday March 28. This is due to a stomach bug that swept through the South African camp.

First attempts to avenge Yassin fail

A series of first attempts by Palestinian militants to avenge the death of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin failed, but the radical Islamic movement promised on Friday they were only ”the beginning”. Israeli soldiers shot dead two heavily armed Hamas militants overnight who had infiltrated a southern Gaza Strip settlement.

Spanish judge questions blast suspects

Examining Judge Juan del Olmo on Friday began questioning two suspects linked to the March 11 train bombings in Madrid, judicial sources said. The sources said Del Olmo was interrogating Faisal Alluch and Khalid Oulad Akcha, arrested last weekend with two other suspects. The four are all Moroccan nationals.

Fiery tanker crash melts bridge

A fiery tanker truck crash that melted a bridge and closed a 1,5km stretch of interstate highway between New York and Boston will likely snarl traffic for weeks, officials say. The truck carrying 45 425 liters of fuel oil collided with a car on Thursday night, sparking a huge fire.
