Sizzlers killers found guilty

The two Sizzlers killers were found guilty in the Cape High Court on Thursday on nine counts of premeditated murder, one of attempted murder and one of armed robbery, all of which carry prescribed minimum sentences. On the murder charges, Adam Roy Woest and Trevor Basil Theys face nine prescribed life sentences.

Landmines threaten two million in Ethiopia

Landmines threaten the lives of two million people in Ethiopia, according to the findings of an international two-year survey to be released on Thursday. The <i>Ethiopian Landmine Impact Survey</i> also reveals that over the past two years 16 000 people have been involved in landmine blast incidents, of whom 1 295 were killed or injured.

Equatorial Guinea, SA meet on coup attempt

Equatorial Guinea’s deputy foreign minister briefed the South African government on Thursday on developments in his country, where South Africans have been accused of being involved in preparations for a coup d’état. Sources said ”a message of gratitude” had likely been sent from the Equatorial president for South Africa’s role in foiling a coup attempt.

Pope says Jesus film isn’t anti-Semitic

Pope John Paul II does not consider Mel Gibson’s controversial movie The Passion of the Christ anti-Semitic, Vatican spokesperson Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in an interview published on Thursday. Navarro-Valls said the Vatican would not issue an official statement distancing itself from the biblical epic about Christ’s crucifixion.

Mandela honours Slovo at SACP launch

<img src="http://www.mg.co.za/ContentImages/41909/10-X-Logo.gif" align=left>Former president Nelson Mandela on Thursday put aside his tight schedule to pay tribute to his lifelong comrade Joe Slovo, the past chairperson of the South African Communist Party (SACP), at Slovo’s Avalon grave in Soweto. Mandela’s visit coincided with the launch of the Joe Slovo Election Trail campaign by the SACP.
