Manchester United back at the top

Manchester United regained the top spot in the Premiership table on Friday despite a late goal from Duncan Ferguson giving Alex Ferguson’s men a scare before they ran out 3-2 winners against Everton at Old Trafford. United now sit top of the Premiership table on 43 points, with Arsenal second on 42.

Charlton cut Chelsea down to size

Charlton’s highest home crowd at The Valley in more than a decade was given a Boxing Day treat as the Addicks threw a spanner into the works of Chelsea’s title challenge. Headers from Hermann Hreidarsson, Matt Holland, Jonatan Johansson and Jason Euell guided the home side to a thrilling and fully deserved 4-2 victory.

Two die in Iraq mortar attack

Two United States soldiers were killed and four others wounded on Thursday in a mortar attack on an army base near Baquba, 60km northeast of Baghdad, a US military spokesperson said. Baquba, in Diyala, is a hotbed of anti-US resistance where army bases have been periodically shelled by mortars.

Cloudburst in Zambia kills four

Four people died and several others were injured in the Zambian capital Lusaka on Christmas after more than 100 houses collapsed following torrential rain, state-run media reported on Friday. Police sources quoted in the Times of Zambia said the collapses occurred in two teeming shantytowns in the city.

Aftershocks rattle California

A series of earthquakes on Thursday shook the Paso Robles area of California, where a magnitude-6,5 quake earlier this week killed two people, flattened historic buildings and caused -million in damage. There were no reports of damage or injuries from the Christmas Day temblors.

Infant killed in Costa Rica quake

An infant was killed by falling debris and dozens of people were injured when a strong earthquake shook the border of Costa Rica and Panama early on Thursday, Panama’s federal relief agency reported. The magnitude-6,3 tremor struck at 2.11am local time at a depth of 33,6km.

Pakistani leader survives suicide bombing

A suicide bombing on Thursday killed 14 people in the second attempt on Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf’s life in 11 days, raising troubling questions about Musharraf’s ability to hold on to power and keep a militant Islamic movement at bay. After the attack the leader vowed to ”cleanse the country of these extremists”.
