Shaq considers OIympic return

Shaquille O’Neal, the giant Los Angeles Lakers centre who won most valuable player honours at Sunday’s National Basketball Association All-Star Game, is considering joining the United States Olympic team. ”It depends on how far we go in the playoffs,” O’Neal said. ”I think it’s very, very burdensome.”

New Bok coach’s assistants named

Springbok selector Allister Coetzee and Stormers coach Gert Smal have been confirmed as assistant coaches to new Springbok coach Jake White. ”We are pleased to have concluded this matter swiftly to allow the new coaching structure an immediate opportunity to begin its planning,” said South African Rugby Football Union president Brian van Rooyen.

Bleak outlook for SA teams in Super 12

The Bulls stand out as the South African team best equipped to challenge for Super 12 glory this year. The results of the four teams last year mirrored the general poor health of a sport beset with problems on and off the field. ‘I never said Iraq had weapons’

Former United Nations chief weapons inspector Hans Blix said on Spanish radio in Madrid on Monday that at no point had he ever said that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. The Spanish government based its justification for supporting the war in Iraq on UN claims that Iraq possessed the weapons.

Bird flu marches on across Asia

Asia’s bird flu crisis showed no sign of easing on Monday as new outbreaks of the disease that has left 20 people dead were reported across the region. Thailand, which on Saturday confidently predicted it would have eradicated the disease by the end of the month, saw its campaign to wipe out bird flu suffer a setback with nine new outbreaks.

Accusations fly after Moscow disaster

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed on Monday to bring to justice those responsible for a weekend water park tragedy that killed at least 28 people as rescuers called off their search in the freezing snow. Putin demanded that ”the guilty be punished” after the water park’s glass roof collapsed on Saturday.
