The Ruud awakening

Not for the first time in his Manchester United career, and probably not the last, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s sense of timing was impeccable. Man U’s prolific striker took the chance last Tuesday to impress his national coach.

The nastiest man in the game

Sinisa Mihajlovic seems to have a Faustian fascination with controversy. Lazio’s Serbia-Montenegro international heaped more shame on himself and his team during their 4-0 home defeat by Chelsea when he spat at Adrian Mutu. Anyone who has followed his career, though, will not have been surprised.

That is, in summary, the opinion of my analyst friend on the strange phenomenon of “roasting”, as expounded in most newspapers recently by Nicholas Meikle.

The United States’s labour market has roared back to life, creating twice as many jobs as expected last month, government figures showed last week, prompting speculation that the US Federal Reserve could call a halt to its policy of rockbottom interest rates.

A face-lift for Lagos

Blocked drains, heaps of garbage in the streets, remnants of food and disused household items: these things have become a common sight in the Nigerian commercial capital of Lagos over the past few years, prompting some to label it the ”dirtiest city in the world”. But Lagos is about to turn over a new leaf.
