Fana on course for eliminator

It seems the waiting is finally over for Mzonke ”The Rose of Khayelitsha” Fana to fight for the WBC junior lightweight title. But Fana, the WBC international champion, will first have to brush Rand Suico aside in April. Fana occupies the number-one spot while the undefeated Filipino is rated second.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Freddie Kanoute stole the headlines on Monday as he scored twice to give Mali an opening 3-1 in the African Nations Cup over Kenya while co-favourites Senegal could only draw 0-0 with Burkina Faso in the other Group B match.

Agassi marches on

Four-time winner Andre Agassi is through to his sixth Australian Open semifinal after Sebastien Grosjean succumbed to a groin strain early in their last-eight match in Melbourne on Tuesday. The 33-year-old American will now take on world number one Andy Roddick or unseeded Russian Marat Safin.

Henin-Hardenne advances in Aussie Open

Top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne advanced to the Australian Open semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over number five Lindsay Davenport on Tuesday, and fourth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of her quarterfinal with torn back muscles. ”I did [hit] a lot of winners today, there was no easy points to her,” said Henin-Hardenne.

Don King in libel action

Boxing promoter Don King won the first round of a legal battle with WBC world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis on Monday when a judge refused to throw his libel action out of an English court. King is suing Lewis, his promotions company and lawyer Judd Burstein for libel, arising out of interviews Burstein gave to two websites.

SA struggle, but beat Benin

Italian-based Siyabonga Nomvethe scored twice in the second half to give South Africa a 2-0 victory against minnows Benin in an African Cup of Nations Group D match played in Sfax on Tuesday. Benin belied their minnow status by taking the game to the South Africans and should have received a penalty midway through the first half.

Clashes as columnist appears in court

Placard-carrying sympathisers of popular tabloid columnist Roy Clarke and government supporters clashed outside Lusaka’s High Court on Monday as Clarke appeared in a case in which he is contesting a government deportation order. Additional police had to be posted throughout the court grounds.

Top DA brass low on Gauteng list

The provisional Gauteng province list for South Africa’s official opposition Democratic Alliance has placed front-benchers in the National Assembly, including shadow finance minister Raenette Taljaard, too low to be re-elected. DA leader Tony Leon is at the top of the list, with Gauteng leader Ian Davidson at number two.
