I visited Highbury for the umpteenth time on Tuesday with the towering youths who infest my house, masquerading as children. After watching the table-topping Gunners slide to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the League Cup semifinal, their first loss in 30 games on the domestic scene, I came to three logical conclusions.

One of the world’s best skysurfers has died after landing heavily during a freefall competition in Australia, the family of Queenslander Pauline Richards said on Friday. Richards (44) had made almost 4 000 jumps and was Australia’s top female skysurfer.

Salome Isaacs, the woman who accused prominent South African judge Siraj Desai of raping her, has unconditionally withdrawn the charges. In a statement on Thursday signed by Isaacs and her husband Mark, she said: ”I hereby wish unconditionally to withdraw the allegation of rape against Mr Siraj Desai.”

National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka will not sue those who accused him of having been an apartheid spy, nor resign his post, he said in Johannesburg on Thursday. ”There is a bigger battle to be fought and won in courts. That is the battle against crime,” he said.

The Inkatha Freedom Party on Thursday asked whether South African Broadcasting Corporation spokesperson Paul Setsetse had received intensive training from Zimbabwe’s Information Minister, Jonathan Moyo. The SABC refused, on Wednesday, to meet with the Democratic Alliance about its election coverage policy.

Lesetja Kganyago has been appointed the new Director General of the South African National Treasury. Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel made the announcement at a press conference in Pretoria on Thursday. The announcement came as no surprise to capital market participants.
