What has happened to the tribe that gave us the imposing Voortrekker Monument? The Taal Monument with its seemingly Viagra foundations? Somehow, the koeksister monument, which would come in at a mere 2m in a rugby line-out, just doesn’t have the same ring to it, writes Mike van Graan.

The idea of the Siyagruva series first came to me at a conference in mid-1999 when I listened to the head of the Centre for the Book in Cape Town, Elisabeth Anderson, talk about the need to get young people — teenagers — to read. Robin Malan, editor of the new Siyagruva series of novels for teens, tells how the successful project came about and developed.

Opposition political parties have lambasted President Thabo Mbeki for his statement in the United States that he personally does not know anyone who has died of Aids, and called for him to apologise immediately. Democratic Alliance spokesperson Mike Waters said Mbeki’s comments were highly insensitive.

United States Secretary of State Colin Powell has called on Israel to dismantle illegal outposts in the West Bank during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom. Powell insisted the Israeli government ”continues dismantling” wildcat settlements in line with the US-backed road map to peace.

British rock singer Robert Palmer, best known for his Eighties hits Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible, died on Friday in Paris of a heart attack. He was 54. Born Alan Palmer, the singer was a member of several British rock bands before he achieved solo fame.

Media 24, publisher of the Sunday newspaper City Press, has hired an independent legal investigator to look into claims made in The Star on Friday that City Press editor Vusi Mona was linked to a company being paid millions to manage Mpumalanga’s scandal-clad image.
