The School of Languages and Literature at Unisa, in conjuction with the John Povey Centre, will present a literary programme in its summer festival, called Celebrating Diversity, from October 1 to 3.
And diversity there is in a programme on show at the Little Theatre in Skinner Street, Pretoria. There are talks on World Englishes, on Storytelling in the African Tradition (by Elinor Sisulu), on Herman Charles Bosman, Alan Paton (whose centenary it is this year), André Brink and William Shakespeare. In the meantime, at Cape Town’s Centre for the Book (62 Queen Victoria Street), there are three exhibitions between now and November.
The first is Turning the Page: ‘New Writers’ Exhibition, a display of the latest new writing from South Africans.
The second is an exhibition of the manuscripts of the late Tatamkhulu Afrika’s autobiography, Mr Chameleon. By the time he died in December last year Afrika had published eight collections of poems and three prose works. He had just completed his autobiography, which was typed and edited by Robin Malan.
Third, there is an exhibition of Snailpress publications. This imprint, run by Gus Ferguson, published almost all the important poetry written in South Africa over about 10 years.
