The death toll from the recent brutal attacks by suicide bombers on two small-town communities in northern Iraq crept up above 500, making it by far the worst atrocity since the 2003 invasion. DA vows to hold Cape Town

The leader of South Africa’s main opposition party on Monday said floor-crossing would not change the balance of power in Cape Town, the only major city not controlled by the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The DA opposes floor-crossing, which it says favours the ANC and weakens democracy.

Iran gives barbers the chop

Police in Tehran have closed two dozen barbers and hairdressers in a fortnight in the latest phase of a ”morals” crackdown aimed at enforcing Islamic dress codes among young Iranians. The businesses were shut after being identified as purveyors of decadent ”Western” culture.

Draw for Swallows not bad, but …

Moroka Swallows completed a 1-1 Premier Soccer League (PSL) draw against Santos at an almost deserted Athlone Stadium on Sunday. Also, Jomo Cosmos beat SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars drew 1-1 and Ajax Cape Town came back from behind to beat Benoni Premier United 2-2.

Stoner moves closer to MotoGP title

Australian rider Casey Stoner took another stride towards his first world championship title by outclassing the field to claim his third consecutive MotoGP victory in Misano, Italy, on Sunday. The Ducati rider started from pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix and left most of his rivals in his wake.

Four-year-old survives mall balcony fall

A four-year-old boy was in a serious but stable condition in hospital after falling from a balcony at the Cresta shopping centre in Northcliff, said Johannesburg paramedics on Sunday. A Netcare 911 spokesperson said the incident occurred on the first level of the complex near several restaurants on Saturday night.
