The African National Congress (ANC) has noted the release on Monday of its former National Assembly chief whip from prison and says that it has "consistently held" that the law must take its course without fear or favour. The party also hinted that there could be a role for Tony Yengeni in what it terms the building of a non-racial society.

Luis Carlos de Noronha Cabral de Camara boasted of his noble Portuguese lineage, but was not a happy man. As the illegitimate and unloved son of an aristocratic woman, he was rich but had few friends and no offspring of his own. So when it came to writing out his will almost 20 years ago, he asked a Portuguese notary for a copy of the Lisbon phone book and plucked out names at random.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor enjoyed the honour of hosting the 16th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers held in Cape Town in December last year. This triennial gathering brings together education ministers from the 53 Commonwealth member states.

A Cape Town-based NGO, Gold Peer Education Development Agency, has designed a programme for the youth to educate their peers on how to prevent further spreading of HIV/Aids. This saw the agency winning the first prize of the inaugural Commonwealth Good Practice Awards — held in Cape Town late last year.

With just days to go before the seventh World Social Forum (WSF) kicks off in Nairobi, it is all systems go among the organisers, who are preparing to welcome thousands of delegates to the Kenyan capital for the January 20 to 25 gathering. The yearly forum will provide a platform for groups and individuals who oppose the current system of globalisation.

The decline of the 2006 matric pass rate by 1,7% indicates that “we are not yet as competent as we should be at achieving better outcomes”, said Education Minister Naledi Pandor. Pandor was speaking at the announcement of the 2006 Senior Certificate Examination results in which the overall pass rate dropped to 66,6%.

The United Nations said more than 34 000 Iraqi civilians were killed in violence last year, although the number decreased slightly in the last two months compared with September and October. The UN human rights chief in Iraq, Gianni Magazzeni, told a news conference on Tuesday that 34 452 civilians were killed and more than 36 000 wounded in 2006.
