Pierneef thief behind bars

A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a R2,5-million Pierneef painting from the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s offices, Beeld reported on Saturday. The man, a 43-year-old Mellville restaurant waiter, was arrested at his home in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, on Friday.

Juventus draw with Genoa

Juventus moved into a tie for first place in Serie B after drawing with Genoa 1-1 on Friday. Pavel Nedved put Juventus ahead in the 71st minute and Ivan Juric equalised for Genoa three minutes later. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon saved a penalty kick in the 31st.

Chiluba in SA for medical treatment

Zambia’s former president Frederick Chiluba arrived in South Africa on Friday for medical treatment after a court overturned a decision by President Levy Mwanawasa to block Chiluba’s wife from travelling with him. Chiluba briefly spoke to journalists before leaving Lusaka airport, where an intelligence source said he held a 20-minute closed-door meeting with a Libyan diplomat.

Double-century puts England in charge

Paul Collingwood became the first Englishman to score a Test double-century in Australia in 70 years on a record-breaking day for England in the second Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Town offers nativity scene without baby Jesus

Christ is missing from Christmas in this small town. The community’s holiday display has a manger with shepherds, a guiding star, camels and a palm tree, but no baby Jesus, Mary or Joseph. The parks superintendent said Jesus was left out because of concerns about the separation of church and state.

Supreme Court takes ‘Bong Hits 4 Jesus’ case

The United States Supreme Court stepped into a dispute over free speech rights on Friday involving a suspended high school student and his banner that proclaimed ”Bong Hits 4 Jesus”. Justices agreed to hear the appeal by the Juneau, Alaska, school board and principal Deborah Morse of a lower court ruling that allowed the student’s civil rights lawsuit to proceed.

Durian kills hundreds in Philippines

Distraught survivors searched piles of bodies for the faces of their loved ones in the central Philippines on Saturday after landslides triggered by Typhoon Durian left hundreds dead. Driving rain and winds of up to 225kph dislodged tonnes of mud and boulders from the slopes of Mount Mayon, an active volcano about 320km south of Manila.
