A man died from injuries sustained when he was beaten by outraged Motherwell residents after he raped a five-year-old girl, Port Elizabeth police said on Tuesday. Police said the child’s mother had told elders in the community about the rape, which took place on Saturday.

A nuclear reactor at Koeberg in Cape Town was restored on Tuesday after it automatically shut down on Sunday night, Eskom said. ”The power level will be increased during the course of today [Tuesday] and the unit is expected to be back to the previous power level of 84% on Wednesday morning,” said a spokesperson.

Operations at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg returned to normal following a jet-fuel leak on Tuesday, the Airports Company South Africa said. South African Airways flights were delayed by about two hours, a spokesperson said, and Nationwide flights by about 30 minutes.

Engineers have unveiled what they hope is the future for commercial airliners — a radical ”flying wing” designed to be so quiet that no one outside an airport will be able to hear it. The SAX-40 would be 25% more fuel-efficient than modern planes and carry 215 passengers up to 5 000 nautical miles at a maximum speed of 960kph.

Alleged serial rapist Mongezi Samuel Jinxela (38) pleaded not guilty to 74 of the 261 charges against him in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday. Neatly dressed in a chequered shirt and a blue tie, Jinxela was expected to plead to the rest of the charges against him after the tea break.

Two US police officers are suing Burger King after they were served hamburgers that had been spiked with marijuana. The officers, Mark Landavazo and Henry Gabaldon, were in uniform and travelling in a marked police car when they bought the burgers from a drive-through Burger King in Los Lunas, New Mexico, last month.
