Zimbabwean police have arrested more than 2 000 people attempting to cross the border illegally in a 12-day blitz along the country’s extensive border with southern neighbour South Africa, reports said on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Tafanana Dzirutwe said the arrests were part of a police blitz that took place from November 13 to 25.

Iraq is nearly in civil war and could fall into civil war unless urgent steps are taken to prevent this, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said on Monday in a rare comment on the situation in Iraq. ”Given the developments on the ground … we could be there. In fact we are almost there,” Annan told reporters in response to a question.

The owner of Cape Town’s Teazers nightclub, charged with shooting dead a street child for breaking into his car, told police he had thrown the firearm into the sea, the Cape High Court heard on Monday. Police inspector Kenneth Speed told the court this information turned out to be false.
