Indian tour starts on soggy note

The first MTN one-day international between South Africa and India at the Wanderers was officially called off at 6.30 pm on Sunday because of persistent rain. About 30 000 people had braved the elements, hoping to see some action. It was overcast in the morning, but rain started falling just before the toss at two o’clock, and the covers were brought on.

Beijing plans world’s biggest subway

Beijing is planning to build the world’s biggest subway and dramatically expand its bus network as part of efforts to combat the city’s fast-increasing traffic grid-lock, state press said on Monday. The Chinese capital will expand its subway system to 273km by 2010 and to 561km by 2020.

Chiluba due in Johannesburg for treatment

Zambia’s ailing former president Frederick Chiluba was due in South Africa on Monday to receive treatment for an acute heart condition. Chiluba was expected to leave Zambia in the afternoon for Johannesburg where he will undergo medical examinations following his deteriorating health caused by a cardiac complication.

African leaders are expressing a renewed sense of urgency about tackling unemployment among young people and are beginning to develop and implement plans to create jobs in the region. "In Africa, the problem of youth unemployment is more complex than in some other parts of the world," says Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki.

Angola could be ‘China of the African continent’

Credit Guarantee said on Monday it had reviewed and upgraded its credit ratings of four of South Africa’s trading partners and had also re-rated Angola as open for export cover. "Having emerged from under the cloud of civil war, enormous opportunities now exist in the construction, agricultural, infrastructural, tourism and oil/mining-linked sectors [of Angola]," said Credit Guarantee.

JSE heads higher as metals recover

The JSE was looking to snap its three-day losing streak on Monday with a recovery in precious-metals prices lifting resources stocks. News was a little on the sparse side and dealers said that the market was quiet. By 11.48am, the all-share index added 0,65%. Resources rallied 1,51%, the platinum-mining index surged 4,04% and the gold-mining index jumped 2,82%.
