Fletcher must go, says Boycott

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has called for Duncan Fletcher to be axed as coach following the side’s comprehensive defeat to Australia in a Champions Trophy group match on Saturday. ”If you talk to people like John Wright and Bob Woolmer, successful coaches with a lot of experience, they will tell you that the job comes with a shelf-life,” Boycott wrote in Monday’s Daily Telegraph.

More white farmers face eviction in Zim

At least 40 more white farmers face eviction in Zimbabwe after they received orders from the government to cease operations and vacate their land, a farmers’ union said on Monday. ”So far 40 eviction notices have been given out by the government,” Emily Crookes, a spokesperson for the Commercial Farmers’ Union, said.

Lacklustre JSE treads water

The JSE was treading water just after midday on Monday in extremely quiet, lacklustre trade. While a weaker currency knocked banks, it failed to significantly boost rand hedges. At 12.02pm, the all-share index was off a neither-here-nor-there 0,02%, while the all-share industrial index dipped 0,06%. Financials had fallen 0,35% and the banks index had dropped 1,52%.

Jo’burg university hit by fire

A fire broke out in the administration block of the University of Johannesburg campus in Doornfontein on Monday morning, emergency services said. Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the blaze was extinguished before 7.15am. ”We are now busy with the ventilation of the building. The investigator is at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.”

Chad claims to have repelled rebel attack

Rebels attacked a town in remote eastern Chad near the border with Sudan on Sunday but government forces repelled the assault and were back in control, the government said on Monday. ”The rebels infiltrated the town of Goz Beida in the east of Chad at around 4pm [local time]. They were pushed back by the Chadian national army,” Communication Minister Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor said.

I was close to being dead, says Top Gear star

Television presenter Richard Hammond has revealed he thought he was going to die after his high-speed smash in a jet-powered car last month. In his first interview since the accident, the Top Gear co-presenter talked about the moments after he crashed his Vampire dragster as he accelerated to 460kph while filming a feature for the BBC show at a Royal Air Force airfield near York.

DA, PetroSA reach settlement over Oilgate documents

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and state-owned oil company PetroSA settled their ”Oilgate” documents dispute on Monday, with the DA claiming victory. Under the agreement — made an order of the court by Cape Deputy Judge President Jeanette Traverso — PetroSA has to supply the DA with documents relating to the so-called Oilgate transaction by November 13.

Thieves discover dentists’ tomb in Egypt

The arrest of tomb robbers led archaeologists to the graves of three royal dentists, protected by a curse and hidden in the desert sands for thousands of years in the shadow of Egypt’s most ancient pyramid, officials announced. The thieves launched their own dig one summer night two months ago but were apprehended.
