DA berates ANC over Selebi

The Democratic Alliance (DA) lashed out at the ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Sunday for not discussing the friendship between police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi and arrested businessman Glenn Agliotti at its top-level meeting over the weekend.

The party’s safety and security spokesperson Diane Kohler-Barnard said Selebi could not remain in office while the investigation into Glen Agliotti and the murder of Brett Kebble continued.

”The ANC national executive committee [NEC] seems blissfully unaware of the fact that everyone in South Africa is talking about the friendship between police Commissioner Jackie Selebi and Kebble murder suspect Glen Agliotti.

”This is the single most pertinent issue on everyone’s mind, but the NEC seemingly believes that the problem will go away if they ignore it for long enough.”

She said the NEC had missed the opportunity to prove its commitment to the fight against crime.

When the NEC met over the weekend it threw its weight behind Selebi following a briefing by Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula, according to a report in City Press.

The report added that ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said the NEC was ”unanimous” during the deliberations and that the question of whether Selebi should stand down ”did not even arise” as members were told that the issue was being handled at government level. — Sapa
