Nigerian militants release foreign oil workers

Militants in Nigeria have freed seven foreign oil workers seized during an attack earlier this month on an ExxonMobil compound, a spokesperson for the company said. The seven were taken hostage on October 3 during a raid on a residential compound housing ExxonMobil employees in the southern Niger Delta town of Eket.

Ajax Cape Town came from behind to share the spoils with Santos in their Cape Town Premier Soccer League derby at the Greenpoint Stadium on Saturday. The game ended 1-1. Santos blew their chances of collecting full points when Byron Hendricks was sent off in the first half.

Premier Soccer League leaders Silver Stars’ magic carriage ride came to an abrupt end in a comprehensive 2-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon. A rampant and uninhibited Pirates outplayed their dogged and determined opponents and were in the driver’s seat as early as the fourth minute when deceptive Ethiopian striker Tefera Fiku opened the score.

Chelsea notch up win in Premiership

Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack both scored for Chelsea on Saturday, helping the defending champions beat Portsmouth 2-1 in the English Premier League. Also on Saturday, it was: Charlton 0, Watford 0; Everton 2, Sheffield United 0; Wigan 4, Manchester City 0; and Aston Villa 1, Fulham 1.

More adventurous, more inventive and more enterprising, Kaizer Chiefs deservedly added the South African Airways Supa8 Cup to their crowded trophy cabinet after beating Supersport United 1-0 at King’s Park in Durban on Saturday night. A near-capacity crowd of 40 000 saw the Amakhosi take control of the game in the second half.
