The Democratic Alliance on Monday called for an urgent investigation into the Gautrain project, suggesting the Auditor General lead it. This follows weekend reports that two Cabinet ministers, among others, are among the shareholders of a consortium tasked with the already controversial Gautrain project.

A young South African was on Monday fined by a local court for playing hooky from work and trying to cover it with a fake gynaecologist’s certificate attesting he was pregnant and needed a week off. A magistrate’s court in Vereeniging, near Johannesburg, fined 27-year-old Charles Sibindana R1Â 000 for the brazen forgery, the media reported.

Last-ditch attempts by religious groups to block the controversial Civil Union Bill suffered another blow on Monday when the National Council of Provinces’ social-services committee gave it the green light. Following an exhaustive public hearing process on the measure, the committee voted in favour of the legislation, defying calls for the Bill to be either abolished or revised.

Drinking and driving can cost motorists more than a lost licence, a fine and jail time, an insurance company said on Monday. Keith Kennedy, executive general manager of claims at Mutual and Federal, said a motorist driving under the influence of alcohol is not insured.

About 12Â 000 people will flood into Cape Town this weekend for the biggest international conference the city has ever hosted — the three-yearly World Diabetes Congress. The executive director of the International Diabetes Foundation, Luc Hendrickx, told reporters in Cape Town on Monday that diabetes is responsible for about four million deaths worldwide every year.

South Africa have recalled Ashwell Prince for the last two one-day internationals against India. Prince replaced fellow batsman Boeta Dippenaar in the only change to the squad that has earned South Africa a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Prince (29) played the last of his 37 one-day internationals against Sri Lanka in Hobart on February 7.

Mohammad Yousuf set a batting record with his eighth hundred of 2006 but West Indies restricted Pakistan to 257-7 at close of play on the first day of the third and final Test. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and United Nations security forces were out in strength on Monday in a tense Kinshasa ahead of a Supreme Court ruling on an electoral challenge by losing presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba. Dozens of riot police were on guard around the Foreign Ministry, where the court has worked since its building was partly burned during a violent protest.
