The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Thursday unanimously reaffirmed its unequivocal support for embattled former South African deputy president Jacob Zuma, who has been charged by the National Prosecuting Authority with corruption. Allegations of rape have also been made against him.

Jilted motor mechanic Alan Gietzmann was on Thursday jailed for life for the premeditated murder of his teenaged girlfriend, Caryn Lindesay. In addition, he was jailed for 22 years on five counts of inciting five different vagrant men to rape and murder Lindesay.

Five National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) forensic experts are to be sent to Namibia next week to help with the investigation of mass graves recently discovered in the north of that country. The team will meet their Namibian counterparts, visit the area and inspect the human remains.

Parliament’s chief finance officer Harry Charleton has been suspended with immediate effect pending an inquiry.Charleton was suspended by Secretary to Parliament Zingile Dingani last Friday ”due to serious allegations that have been levelled against him”, Parliament’s chief operating officer Tango Lamani confirmed on Thursday.

Rebels from the Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) have again entered the Democratic Republic of Congo from Sudan, a senior DRC officer said on Thursday. ”We have not seen them ourselves but since November 12 rangers in the [Garamba] park have reported the presence of 20 to 50 elements of the LRA in the northeast of the park,” regional commander General Constant Ndima said.

The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) said on Thursday that a small group of Ethiopian soldiers had breached a de-militarised buffer zone inside Eritrea amid soaring border tensions. A day after the UN Security Council threatened to slap sanctions on both Addis Ababa and Asmara if either resumes hostilities in the long-running dispute, UNMEE said the Ethiopian troops had been in the zone for five days.

At least 30 people were killed when a car bomb exploded outside a hospital in Iraq on Thursday in a notorious area known as the ”triangle of death”. The bombing, which also left about 23 people wounded, occurred in Mahmudiyah, about 20km south of the capital, in an area known for frequent insurgent attacks on Iraqi and United States government forces.

Dinner shared by a group of friends at a well-appointed Greenwich Village apartment features eggplant Parmesan with a salad of mixed greens and avocado dressing. The guests already have snacked on hors d’oeuvres of smoked mozzarella and crackers. Not bad considering the diners find their food by digging through garbage.
