Turkish town hit by third quake in a month

An earthquake measuring 5,5 on the Richter scale rattled an eastern Turkish town overnight, leaving six people injured, officials said on Thursday. The quake, the third powerful tremor to hit the town of Karliova in Bingol province this month, was followed by an aftershock that registered 4,7 on the Richter scale.

Production lost due to mine strike

One full day’s production has been lost as a result of a strike by 21 000 workers at Harmony gold mines in the Free State. Although one official statement from Harmony says the strike has to do with unresolved issues, chief executive Bernard Swanepoel acknowledged that retrenchment notices triggered the strike.

Schumacher feels good about new car

Michael Schumacher tested his new Ferrari for the first time on Wednesday in a hurried effort to get the car into action and improve on his poor start to the season. ”My feelings are good,” Schumacher said after driving 50 laps in the new car. ”I realised immediately that the F-2005 is fast.”

Cyclone affects SAA Mauritius flights

South African Airways (SAA) has cancelled its scheduled Thursday flight to and from Mauritius because of a tropical cyclone. The airline said the flight has fallen foul of precautions being taken in Mauritius in advance of the expected arrival there of Cyclone Hennie. SAA said the island’s international airport has been closed for the day.

Zondeki breaks away to Cape Town

The acting CEO of the Border Cricket Board, Greg Hayes, and Warriors coach Mickey Arthur dropped a bombshell when they announced on Wednesday that Protea express bowler Monde Zondeki has decided to pursue his career with the Western Province-Boland franchise from next summer. ”He goes with our blessing,” Hayes said.

Mines: More disharmony

South Africa’s mining industry looked set for further disruption on Wednesday as more than 20 000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers planned to down tools at Harmony’s Virginia, Free State, mine. This follows the impending closure of Durban Roodepoort Deep’s North West operations, which will cost 6 000 jobs.

Still no luck for Rangers

Manning Rangers’ woes continued when they were beaten 1-0 by a 10-man Supersport United in their Castle Premiership encounter played at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night. Supersport finished the game a man down following a red card given to Edward Williams after his second bookable offence in the 50th minute.

The New South Wales Waratahs may be unbeaten after a month’s Super 12 rugby but the Canterbury Crusaders are the favourites with bookmakers to win their sixth southern-hemisphere provincial crown.
