Late goal leads Stars to victory

Silver Stars moved up to seventh spot of the Castle Premier Soccer League log on Wednesday afternoon courtesy of a late strike from Dingane Masanabo. His goal in the 82nd minute gave the home team a 1-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Seshego Stadium. A number of opportunities were missed by both teams.

Doggy paddles across shipping lane

When six-month-old Jack Russell puppy Toby, startled by a gunshot, leapt off a 21m cliff and into a busy shipping lane, his owners presumed it was the last they would see of their beloved pet. But Toby was made of stronger stuff. The white-and-tan terrier puppy survived the sheer drop and plunged into Plymouth Sound.

New initiatives to slash costs of formula one

Formula-one chiefs are stepping up their campaign to slash escalating costs with cutbacks in testing as well as reducing the mini army of people on team duty at grand-prix weekends being proposed. The governing body of the sport, the FIA, believes significant savings can be found by restrictions on testing and by reverting to just one tyre supplier.

Chiefs’ birthday boy brings in the goals

Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs moved into second place in the Castle Premiership when they defeated Black Leopards 3-0 in their Premier Soccer League fixture played at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Collins Mbesuma, who celebrated his 21st birthday in style after the game in which he scored the opening two goals for Amakhosi.

Cosmos ease relegation woes

Jomo Cosmos eased their relegation woes when they beat a struggling Santos 2-0 in a Castle Premier Soccer League match played at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. Santos, on the other hand, now face a real danger of being relegated. Both goals were scored in the first half.

Davenport, Dementieva advance in Tokyo

World number one Lindsay Davenport and Russia’s Elena Dementieva advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament with victories over Japanese opponents in Tokyo on Thursday. American top seed Davenport faced a tougher-than-expected challenge before beating Saori Obata 6-4, 6-3 in 64 minutes.
