Mozambique’s newly elected President, Armando Guebuza, on Wednesday took over the reigns from long-serving leader Joaquim Chissano with a pledge to step up the fight against poverty, bureaucracy and corruption. ”We want to bring about a more accelerated rhythm towards a better future, which translates in a sharp reduction of poverty,” Guebuza said.

A Namibian Supreme Court judge arrested on charges of kidnapping two young girls from a township bus stop and sexually assaulting them was granted bail on Wednesday. Magistrate Sarel Jacobs posted bail of N 000 (R9 600) for Judge Tio Peek and ordered him to hand in his passport.

Listed media group Moneyweb Holdings has agreed to sell 80% of its 19,62% stake in radio station Classic FM to empowerment group Huntrex for a cash consideration of R4-million, Moneyweb said on Wednesday. Moneyweb said the disposal will take effect from the earlier of February 15 or the payment of the first tranche of R2-million.

South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has signed a contract to play for the English club Lashings later this year from June to August. The club’s owner, David Folb, has brought a ”Harlem Globetrotter” element to the team in the past few years when it contracted some of the world’s greatest cricketers, past and present.

A public-awareness programme aimed at discouraging television viewers from becoming ”couch potatoes” has been mounted by the Film and Publications Board (FPB). In the board’s annual report, tabled at Parliament on Wednesday, FPB acting CEO Iyavar Chetty said the programme is aimed at parents, teachers and children.

Hamas and seven other Palestinian groups threatened on Tuesday to call off a truce and return to ”all-out martyrdom attacks” unless Israel commits itself to ending army raids and killings in the occupied territories. The demand followed the killing of a 10-year-old girl at her school in a Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza on Monday.

Local producers of blue agave spirit, used in the production of a tequila-like drink, leave next week for Canada and the United States to conclude trade agreements. International interest in the South African product had been overwhelming, particularly in view of the worldwide tequila shortage.
