Agreement reached over Arafat funeral

An agreement on funeral arrangements to be made in the aftermath of Yasser Arafat’s death was reached on Tuesday by Israeli and Palestinian officials, a senior Palestinian official said on condition of anonymity. ”Senior Palestinian and Israeli officials have reached an agreement in principle on the arrangements to be made after the death of president Arafat,” the official told AFP.

Palestinian officials deny Arafat death

Palestinian officials rushed to deny claims on Tuesday that veteran leader Yasser Arafat has lost his battle for life at a French hospital, as talks with Israel on his funeral were set to begin. Meanwhile, Egypt is offering to host a funeral service for Arafat in Cairo, a Palestinian official said on Tuesday.

Rebels use mobility to counter US attack

Lurking in shabby houses, rebel fighters fire gunshots and rockets at invading United States soldiers before rushing to another building to escape a punishing barrage of American artillery and missiles. Man receives $370m tax bill

A man in Germany received a tax bill for the equivalent of -million after filing a tax return for income of just  000 dollars, a court heard on Tuesday. The bill was the result of a simple typographical error by the Federal Tax Office in the Bonn suburb of Sankt Augustin, a judge at Bonn State Court heard.

No getting away with murder

A man in Germany might have escaped with murdering his wife had it not been for a telemarketer’s call, police said on Tuesday. The husband had just stabbed his wife when the phone rang and she grabbed the phone and stammered, ”Please help me, my husband’s killing me,” before he wrenched the receiver out of her hand.

Ailing Zambian copper industry doing better

Copper mines in mineral-rich Zambia appear to have recovered from a slump two years ago and are expected to reach record levels of about 400 000 tonnes this year, the Central Bank governor said on Tuesday. Caleb Fundanga said production figures for the first nine months of 2004 have surpassed those for the same period in 2003.
