The death toll from flash floods and mudslides in northern Haiti could rise to more than 1 800 when a full assessment of Tropical Storm Jeanne’s devastation is complete, say government officials. More than 1 000 people were declared missing on Wednesday, and 800 have been confirmed dead.

In the run-up to the conference, I had the opportunity to teach two groups of mid-career journalists about the broader issues around reporting on Open Source Software. I guess the only thing that can be said is what Bra Hugh said: that there is nothing more to be said except that Dolly Rathebe was about laughter, joy and music. Sis Dolly Rathebe passed on when nobody expected her to on Thursday last week. The question is: Why did nobody expect her to? She was born, after all, in 1928, which is quite a long time ago. John Matshikiza plays tribute to this lady of jazz.

It is easy to fault the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for boycotting next year’s parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe. Critics fear that conceding every parliamentary seat to Zanu-PF will merely force the party to the margins and prevent it from yellow-carding the ruling party over electoral abuses. At the same time, one should not fall into the error — common among South African officials — of victim-blaming.

Disappointing results of clinical trials for a promising pair of new Aids vaccines have highlighted the dilemmas faced by those determining strategy in this field. Recently, a prominent Kenyan newspaper carried the headline "Aids vaccine trials flop". The following day, the same newspaper carried a second news story, this time with the headline "Search for Aids cure ‘not a flop’". At first sight, the two headlines appear contradictory.

Fuelled by a burgeoning Aids problem, tuberculosis (TB) is experiencing a resurgence in Southern Africa where health officials are beginning to talk of integrating programmes to fight the two diseases. In the past decade, there has been a four-fold increase in the number of TB cases in the sub-region, the present global epicentre of HIV/Aids. Southern Africa has 70% of the continent’s TB cases.

Nicholas Newman won South Africa’s eighth gold medal in the morning session of Athens Paralympic action at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday, while Natalie du Toit swam her second world record in the 200m individual medley at the Aquatic Centre. Newman threw the javelin 38,09m for gold with his first throw.

Trucks dumped scores of bodies into a mass grave in the flood-ravaged Haitian city of Gonaives, which is still littered with corpses, as officials said the death toll from Tropical Storm Jeanne rose to more than 1 070 on Thursday and could double again. There was no funeral ceremony when the bodies were dumped into a 4m-deep hole.
