Zim govt to appeal Tsvangirai treason acquittal

Zimbabwe will appeal against the recent acquittal of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai on charges of plotting to kill President Robert Mugabe before elections in 2002, a state-run newspaper reported on Sunday. Acting Attorney General Bharat Patel said the judgement ”has many flaws and we don’t think it should stand unchallenged”.

UN pledges $83m for Malawi’s Aids orphans

The United Nations on Saturday pledged -million to support a growing population of orphans in the poor Southern African nation of Malawi. ”Malawi will have one million orphans by the year 2010,” said Stephen Lewis in the administrative capital, Lilongwe, at the end of his four-day official visit to Malawi.

Botswana counts ballots

Election officials in Botswana were counting ballots on Sunday following nationwide polls that were expected to see the party in power since independence remain at the helm of the Southern African country. President Festus Mogae’s Botswana Democratic Party is set to win a comfortable majority of the 57 seats in Parliament.

Sack races for stressed Indian MPs

Stressed-out Indian MPs will relax at weekends with sack races and other games if a ministerial proposal is accepted, a report said on Sunday. According to a plan by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, a plethora of sporting events will be organised for the MPs at weekends during parliamentary sessions.

Not much hope left for Africa’s great apes

Chained by the neck to a concrete outhouse in a suburban yard in Douala, Cameroon’s commercial capital, for 12 years, it was not much of a life. But given the alternative, Julie was lucky. Slamming her hands on the ground, the family pet was evidently in distress, but at least she had survived — unlike most great apes in Central Africa.

A constitutional crisis at the heart of Europe was narrowly averted on Saturday after Rocco Buttiglione, the Italian nominee whose anti-gay views had blocked his appointment to the European Commission, finally withdrew his candidacy. In a parting shot, Buttiglione said he had been misquoted and portrayed himself as a scapegoat.
