Warriors fight back against Eagles

The Warriors fought back strongly to deny the Eagles a visit to the top of the log as they drew their Supersport Series match after both captains decided that there was no chance of a result in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Thanks to an undefeated, 120-run fourth-wicket partnership between Arno Jacobs and Mark Boucher, the match meandered to a stalemate with the Warriors still 152 runs behind with seven wickets in hand and only the last mandatory 15 overs left in the game.

Starting the last day with a lead of 224, the Eagles batted on to 317 when Nicky Boje lost his wicket eight runs short of his sixth first-class 100. Together with Johannes van der Wath (48), he had made the game safe for the Eagles with a 107-run partnership and left the Warriors a realistic target of 304 in 78 overs.

Makhaya Ntini was again the destroyer-in-chief, taking 4-71.

Losing three quick wickets for 31, the Warriors lost all momentum as they looked to re-establish the innings. Jacobs added 51 to his first-innings 129 to end undefeated in the match, while Boucher ended on 64 not out to bat the Warriors through to the last 15 overs when the game was called off as a draw.

The man-of-the-match award went to Nicky Boje for his efforts with both the bat and the ball. — Sapa
