Mbeki calls for end to Palestinian sanctions

President Thabo Mbeki on Friday called for an end to all measures intended to isolate the Palestinian Authority and for the parties involved to renew their peace efforts. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Mbeki congratulated Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khalid Mish’al for concluding last week’s Mecca agreement.

US, Iraqi forces meet little resistance in Baghdad

United States and Iraqi forces are meeting little resistance as they sweep through Baghdad, a US officer said on Friday, a day after Iraq’s president said a Shi’ite militia had ordered its leaders to leave the country. The head of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was wounded on Thursday, an Interior Ministry source said.

An era draws to a close this week when French President Jacques Chirac hosts his last summit of leaders from Africa, a continent where France’s traditional influence is being threatened by resource-hungry China. Visa row: UN team cancels Darfur visit

United Nations human rights investigators on Wednesday called off a visit to Darfur after Sudanese officials demanded the removal of the UN’s former top rights official from the group. The six-member team, set up last December by the UN Human Rights Council, said it would pursue its work without entering the country.

Coup trial: Court hears of ignorance of plot

A state witness could not deny on Tuesday that the eight accused in the Equatorial Guinea coup trial may have been ignorant of the plot. Cross-examined in the Pretoria Regional Court on Tuesday, James Kershaw (27) said he himself only found out about the alleged coup two days before the group flew out of South Africa.
