South Africa’s trade balance swung into surplus in December from a R10,5-billion deficit the previous month, official data showed on Wednesday. The surplus was far better than a Reuters survey forecast of a R2-billion deficit in December, although the data is volatile and unpredictable and December is traditionally a low import month.

The northern city of Manchester unexpectedly won the fight to host Britain’s first Las Vegas-style super casino on Tuesday, beating off challengers including nearby Blackpool and London’s Millennium Dome. Most industry analysts had predicted either Blackpool, the Dome or Glasgow in Scotland would win.

The Finance Ministry has invited all South Africans to send their tips to the "Tips for Trevor" campaign about what they would like to see included in next month’s national budget. According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Lindani Mbunyuza, the campaign is run throughout the year and the tips received assist the minister in understanding public sentiment.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) lashed out at the Mail & Guardian on Friday following the publishing of an article that uncovered structural breakdown and infighting within the organisation. British Airways (BA) has cancelled flights to South Africa pending a strike by cabin crew, it said on Friday. British Airways South Africa general manager Lin Glass said no flights from London to South Africa would be available on January 30 and 31. Flights from South Africa to London on February 2 and 3 would also be affected.

Security was tight in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court where South Africa’s ”Houdini”, Annanias Mathe, made a brief appearance on Friday. Nine police officers armed with R4 rifles escorted the limping Mathe inside the court. His case was postponed to March 30 for further investigation. He faces at least 50 charges.

ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe has admitted that Chancellor House — the black economic “empowerment” (BEE) group exposed by the Mail & Guardian last year — is a ruling-party funding vehicle. Motlanthe’s admission was contained in articles on the ANC, business and funding published in the Financial Mail last week. He is quoted as saying that Chancellor House is an “ANC vehicle” whose sole purpose is funding the ANC.
