ANC broad front ‘not new, but welcome’

Left-wing activists have welcomed the planned launch by the African National Congress of a broad “front for development”, saying it will help restore the party’s character as a mass movement. The ruling party announced after its extended national executive lekgotla last weekend that it was establishing a broad front to “harness the energies and efforts of a broad range of groupings”.

Sharapova, Clijsters advance to semis

Kim Clijsters had another quarterfinal win over Martina Hingis despite a rash of unforced errors, and moved into the Australian Open semifinals against top-seeded Maria Sharapova. Fourth-seeded Clijsters won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday, breaking Hingis’ serve in the last game and ending the match with a forehand passing shot.

Bush defends Iraq plan, asks for chance

United States President George Bush urged a rebellious Congress on Tuesday to give his new Iraq war plan a chance and insisted in his State of the Union speech it is not too late to shape the outcome. Facing sceptical lawmakers and some of the weakest approval ratings of his six years in office, Bush said the best chance for success is to send 21 500 more US troops to Iraq.

ANCYL: World system sidelines the poor

Poverty still exists because the system of world trade has determined that poor countries will not have access to knowledge and technology, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) said on Tuesday. ”We have poverty all over the … simply because the resources have been used to sideline the majority of the people,” said ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula.

ANC on crime: Let us not be spectators

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Monday affirmed its commitment to the fight against crime, poverty and unemployment in the country. Speaking to the media in the wake of the party’s national executive committee lekgotla (meeting), ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said there needs to be ”unity and purpose” in the fight against crime.
