Left-wing activists have welcomed the planned launch by the African National Congress of a broad “front for development”, saying it will help restore the party’s character as a mass movement. The ruling party announced after its extended national executive lekgotla last weekend that it was establishing a broad front to “harness the energies and efforts of a broad range of groupings”.

An opportunity to foster stability in Somalia after years of war is ”being squandered”, the deputy chairperson of the African Union said in an interview published in the Financial Times on Wednesday. United States President George Bush urged a rebellious Congress on Tuesday to give his new Iraq war plan a chance and insisted in his State of the Union speech it is not too late to shape the outcome. Facing sceptical lawmakers and some of the weakest approval ratings of his six years in office, Bush said the best chance for success is to send 21Â 500 more US troops to Iraq.

Alignment to the African National Congress (ANC) will not protect state-funded bodies from scrutiny by the committee charged with reviewing their relevance, its chairperson, Kader Asmal, warned on Tuesday. ”The committee will be objective and non-partisan,” he said, adding that there is not a majority of ANC members on the committee.

Poverty still exists because the system of world trade has determined that poor countries will not have access to knowledge and technology, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) said on Tuesday. ”We have poverty all over the … simply because the resources have been used to sideline the majority of the people,” said ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Monday affirmed its commitment to the fight against crime, poverty and unemployment in the country. Speaking to the media in the wake of the party’s national executive committee lekgotla (meeting), ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said there needs to be ”unity and purpose” in the fight against crime.

Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya has released for public comment a draft law intended to address the problem of substance and alcohol abuse. Skweyiya said the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Bill would help reduce the prevalence of drug abuse among South Africans, particularly children.
