Toll from Cyclone Ivan rises to 60

The death toll in Madagascar from Cyclone Ivan stood at 60 on Tuesday, with another 17 missing, the government said. Figures released by the disaster management centre also said 147 000 were homeless because of the cyclone that hit on February 17 carrying winds of up to 230km/h and torrential rains.

Madagascar cyclone death toll rises

A cyclone that hit Madagascar earlier this month has killed at least 44 people and left nearly 145 000 homeless, according to updated figures released by authorities on Sunday. The numbers are almost twice estimates released on Friday of 29 people dead and 70 000 homeless from the category-three cyclone.

Madagascar cyclone kills 29 people

A cyclone that swept across Madagascar this week killed 29 people and left nearly 70 000 homeless or otherwise affected, local authorities said on Friday. Dia Stivanley, spokesperson for the National Office for Management of Risks and Catastrophes, said 12 of the island’s 22 regions had been hit by Cyclone Ivan, a category-three storm.

Cyclone Ivan kills 22 in Madagascar

Cyclone Ivan killed at least 22 people on Madagascar this week and the death toll is expected to rise, government officials said on Thursday. Ivan, one of the largest cyclones to hit Madagascar, was packing winds of more than 200km/h when it hit the Indian Ocean island’s east coast earlier this week.

Crazed bull rampages through school ground

Several dozen children were hospitalised after a rampaging zebu bull escaped from an abattoir on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar and ran amok in a nearby school ground, reports said on Monday. The bull, described as completely crazed by onlookers, fled his captors into the school, trampling everything in its path.

Madagascar flattens homes ahead of Ocean games

Malagasy authorities have destroyed 137 houses and expect to knock down more ahead of next month’s Indian Ocean Games, an official said on Tuesday. The structures were built illegally on land set aside for the August 9 to 19 competition, said Elyse Razafimahefa, a senior official in the capital, Antananarivo’s, city council.

Madagascar president dissolves Parliament

Madagascar’s President Marc Ravalomanana has dissolved his country’s National Assembly ahead of elections he said would be held by the end of September. In a letter dated July 17 and addressed to the Constitutional Court, but only made public on Tuesday, Ravalomanana said Parliament no longer reflected national representation.
