Twelve pedestrians were knocked down and injured by a police vehicle in Berea in Johannesburg on Thursday, ER24 emergency services said. Spokesperson Riana Beech said the accident happened at the corner of Tudhope and Soper Streets at about 4.30pm.
Four bouncers accused of kidnapping and assaulting two men appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, police said. Spokesperson Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said two of the suspects were released because they could not be directly linked to the case.
Well-known KwaZulu-Natal birder Robin Guy (75) was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night. He and his wife, from Underberg, had been in Johannesburg on a festive-season visit when two robbers disturbed a dinner on the verandah of his brother-in-law’s home, Guy’s journalist son, Duncan, said on Thursday.

About 234 people have been arrested over a 48-hour period in the inner city, Johannesburg police said on Thursday. ”All these people were arrested in Hillbrow, Berea and Joubert Park as part of our accelerated crime combat operations, to maintain a safe environment as we are preparing for the new year celebrations,” said police spokesperson Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla.

More than 200 people were arrested in Johannesburg over the weekend for crimes including rape and robbery, police said on Monday. Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said Hillbrow police arrested 203 people between Friday and Monday morning. Other crimes included pointing of a firearm and being in possession of dagga.
