Masetlha accused of being inconsistent in testifying

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha was on Wednesday accused of not being consistent in testifying in the Hatfield Community Court. Prosecutor Matric Luphondo said Masetlha gave different versions of when a report requested by Inspector General of Intelligence Zolile Ngcakani was compiled. Masetlha is charged with contravening the Intelligence Services Oversight Act.

I complied with inspector general, says Masetlha

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha said he found it amusing that the inspector general of intelligence kept asking for a report that had been sent to him several times, the Hatfield Community Court heard on Monday. Testifying under cross-examination, Masetlha said repeated requests from the inspector general for information ”took him aback”.

Cosatu says there’s no ANC wish list

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has not compiled a ”wish list” of candidates for the national executive committee of the African National Congress (ANC). This follows the Mail and Guardian publishing a list on Friday that it said named the 57 people Cosatu wanted as ANC leaders.

Mbeki was entitled to sack Masetlha

The Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday that President Thabo Mbeki did have the power to sack former National Intelligence Agency director general Billy Masetlha. The president had the power to terminate his employment under section 209(2) of the Constitution, read with section 3 of the Intelligence Services Act.

Masetlha witnesses may be recalled

The last day of testimony in the case of former spy boss Billy Masetlha in Pretoria on Friday ended with the defence applying to recall some of the witnesses who have already testified. Masetlha is charged with withholding information from Inspector General of Intelligence Zolile Ngcakani.

Court told of ANC ‘counter-revolution’

Former director general of the National Intelligence Agency Billy Masetlha has implicated Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils in a ”counter-revolution” meant to destroy the African National Congress (ANC). ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe had said that certain things happening in the party bordered on ”counter-revolution”, Masetlha testified on Wednesday.

Masetlha magistrate denies application for recusal

Magistrate Dreyer van der Merwe on Tuesday denied an application from former spy boss Billy Masetlha’s defence team for his recusal from the case at the Hatfield Community Court in Pretoria. ”The facts presented by the defence are not substantiated to merit a recusal,” the magistrate said after deliberating over the application for about two hours.

Masetlha case postponed

Former National Intelligence Agency director general Billy Masetlha and his two co-accused, software specialist Muziwendoda Kunene and IT specialist Funokwakhe Madlala, had their fraud case postponed in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday. The case was postponed to October 1 for trial and plea.
