Eskom has awarded a R2,9-billion contract to a consortium of South African companies for the construction of the main civil works at its Medupi power station in Limpopo, the utility said on Friday. A consortium made up of Murray & Roberts, Grinaker-LTA Civil Engineering and Concor was awarded the contract.
Eskom has increased coal stockpiles at power stations, the utility said on Saturday. Spokesperson Brian Dames said of the five power stations with the lowest stockpile days, only one remained below the desired level. Eskom announced that it aimed to secure 45-million tons of coal over two years to combat crippling coal shortages.
The government is considering the division of South Africa into two time zones. This is according to Portia Molefe, Director General of Public Enterprises, who was on Wednesday briefing the minerals and energy committee in Parliament on the present electricity crisis.

The power situation has eased somewhat over the past few days and there has been no load-shedding since February 4, Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga told reporters on Thursday in Sunninghill, near Johannesburg. Maroga was announcing measures to be taken by Eskom to resolve the country’s electricity crisis.

Eskom has removed the man in charge of its power stations, the <i>Business Report</i> said on Tuesday. Ehud Matya has been replaced by Brian Dames, another Eskom executive, who will now be responsible for primary energy, power plants and his existing portfolio of capital investment.

Hitachi and Alstom have been awarded the R20-billion boiler and the R13-billion turbine contracts respectively for Eskom’s Medupi power station at Lephalale in the Limpopo Province. ”Medupi will be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world,” said Brian Dames, managing director of Eskom’s Enterprises Division.
