Eskom has removed the man in charge of its power stations, the Business Report said on Tuesday. Ehud Matya has been replaced by Brian Dames, another Eskom executive, who will now be responsible for primary energy, power plants and his existing portfolio of capital investment.
Matya, who remains an executive, will be responsible for negotiating the buying back of power from big industrial users.
Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said on Monday the utility’s CEO, Jacob Maroga, wanted the various components of power generation under one manager. Eskom’s new supply and demand recovery team will be led by Erica Johnson, currently the managing director of system operations.
According to the Business Report, Dames will head the investment of R300-billion on new power plants in the next five years. The report said that will also be responsible for 39 200MW of existing capacity and the sourcing of coal to fire these plants.
Matya has headed generation for eight years and has been with Eskom for 20 years, five of which were as manager of Duvha power station.
