The resignations of President Thabo Mbeki and Finance Minister Trevor Manuel have shocked many, but some have welcomed the news.
Cabinet on Thursday highlighted strategies it says are necessary to deal with rising food prices and reduce the country’s reliance on food imports.
Threats by supporters of ANC president Jacob Zuma to make the country ungovernable should he be sent to jail were cause for concern, said the Cabinet.
Kgalema Motlanthe, appointed by President Thabo Mbeki to Cabinet last week, attended his first meeting of the executive on Tuesday.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa cannot ignore Eskom’s request for a 53% tariff increase, a business research and consulting firm said on Thursday. ”If the country expects the electricity utility to resolve the current capacity crisis, it must be given the resources to do so,” said Frost & Sullivan.
Seven new Bills have been approved by South Africa’s Cabinet to be submitted to Parliament. They include the already controversial Expropriation Bill. The Expropriation Bill seeks to replace the Expropriation Act of 1975, which, Cabinet spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday, does not conform with the Constitution.
