Amla, Prince, Gibbs help SA recover

Half-centuries by Hashim Amla, Ashwell Prince and Herschelle Gibbs helped South Africa to recover from a disastrous start to their first innings on the second day of the first Castle Lager Test against Pakistan at Supersport Park on Friday. At close of play, South Africa had 254 for four in reply to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 313.

Ntini takes five as Pakistan subside

South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini claimed his 16th five-wicket haul to undo Pakistan’s first innings in the first Test on Friday. Fast bowler Ntini took five for 83 as Pakistan were dismissed for 313 an hour before lunch on the second day. South Africa made a shaky start to their reply and were 32 for two at lunch with both wickets falling to fast bowler Mohammad Asif.

Hook shots prove costly for Pakistan

Three Pakistan batsmen fell in quick succession to hook shots to spoil an otherwise solid performance by the tourists on the first day of the first Test against South Africa in Centurion on Thursday. Pakistan were 242-5 at the close, with captain Inzamam ul-Haq unbeaten on 35.

Fast-bowlers have SA, Pakistan concerned

South Africa and Pakistan both have concerns over their fast-bowlers ahead of the first Test of a three-match series starting at Centurion Park on Thursday. Pakistan, already with five fast-bowlers in their squad, added a sixth in the controversial Shoaib Akhtar as cover for Umar Gul, who suffered from an ankle injury during the team’s warm-up match.

SA hopeful of reaching racial targets at World Cup

Convenor of selectors Haroon Lorgat said South Africa were confident of reaching racial targets after naming 14 non-white players on Tuesday in their provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup. Cricket South Africa has imposed a target of seven non-white players in the final 15-man squad, which needs to be announced by February 13.

Titans enter the record books

The Titans beat the Eagles by one run on Sunday in their Supersport Series four-day match played at SuperSport Park in Centurion. This is only the second such result in the history of South African first-class cricket and the 32nd in all first-class cricket.

South African coach Mickey Arthur has warned his struggling players that they need to perform in a three-Test series against New Zealand, starting at Centurion on Saturday, if they want to remain in the country’s long-term Test plans. ”I expect the players to have been toughened up after playing back-to-back Test series against Australia,” said Arthur.

Titans cruise to seven-wicket win

The Titans cruised to a seven-wicket win over the defending champion Eagles in a Standard Bank Pro20 Series match at Supersport Park on Tuesday evening. Having been set a target of 151 runs in 20 overs, the Titans scored the winning runs with four overs to spare as their entire top order chipped in with runs.
