Robert Mugabe, a largely unwelcome guest of the European Union at a summit this weekend, is a hero in the eyes of many Africans for daring to stand up to the West and seize land from white farmers. Many in Europe have been left scratching their heads over how Zimbabwe’s president since independence still commands respect.
For years it was regarded as a backwater and the poor relation to its southern neighbour, but the spiralling crisis in Zimbabwe has led to a massive upsurge in Zambia’s tourism industry. A total of 650Â 000 foreign visitors travelled to Zambia last year, a rise of nearly half a million on the year 2000, bringing in vital revenue to one of the poorest countries in Africa.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon conceded on Monday he may have to call fresh elections to end divisions over his Gaza pull-out plan as pressure for a referendum mounted within his party. In the latest violence, four Palestinians militants were shot dead by Israeli troops, including a Hamas pair who were planning to attack a kibbutz.
