The three trade unions deadlocked in a wage dispute with Telkom have been invited to a meeting with the telecommunications company on Thursday in the hopes of avoiding a strike, the South African Communications Union (Sacu) said on Tuesday. ”Yesterday [Monday] the company said it would meet all the unions on Thursday to discuss the dispute,” said Sacu.
Wage talks between Telkom and the South African Communications Union (Sacu) have deadlocked, the union said on Wednesday. This was after the company proposed a 7,7% average increase to all operational employees on Friday during wage talks, Sacu said in a statement.
Solidarity on Thursday welcomed a Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) ruling on a charge of unfair racial discrimination in the trade union’s favour. Solidarity declared a dispute with South African Airways Technical in February and referred the matter to the CCMA.

Earlier this month the Constitutional Court ruled in a case with tremendous consequences for ordinary South Africans and our system of labour relations. The appeal involved the dismissal, more than seven years ago, of Zingisile Sidumo by Rustenburg Platinum Mines. Sidumo was employed to patrol the mine’s high-security facility, where precious metals are separated from lower-grade concentrate.

South Africa’s mining industry, which records an average of 200 fatalities every year, is seeking to reduce death rates by at least 20% by 2013, the Chamber of Mines said on Thursday. ”To be world-class by 2013, an annual milestone of reducing fatality rates by at least 20% a year is needed,” the chamber’s chief executive said.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union on Wednesday vowed to counter a South African Airways (SAA) restructuring plan, saying management had lied to it and that ”the laws of the jungle shall now apply”. The union issued a statement after the airline’s chief executive, Khaya Ngqula, told media on Wednesday that it was essential to revise work packages.
A draft post-forensic review has cleared the current acting chief executive of the South African Post Office and its financial director of any wrongdoing, the board of the parastatal said on Wednesday. Acting chief executive officer Motshoanetsi Lefoka and chief financial director Nick Buick were implicated in an initial investigation.
