Disaster centre activated as floods hit Pretoria

The Tshwane metropolitan council has activated its disaster operations centre as several parts of Pretoria experienced flooding due to heavy rains in the city. ”The centre operates 24 hours a day and includes emergency services and other personnel who will monitor the situation,” council spokesperson Console Tleane said on Wednesday.

DA: Power cuts could undermine SA’s growth

South Africa’s future growth could be severely compromised by the country’s lack of sufficient power capacity, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Thursday. DA spokesperson Hendrik Schmidt said: ”South Africa’s lack of reserve power capacity has now reached catastrophic proportions and if left unchecked threatens to undermine future growth prospects.”

Power cuts to continue on Thursday

Power cuts are set to continue on Thursday, the Tshwane municipality said. ”Once again, load-shedding is due to Eskom generation constraints,” said municipal spokesperson Console Tleane. He said there was a slim chance that load-shedding would not be as ”intense” on Friday.

SA’s electricity consumption on the up

The estimated consumption of electricity in November 2007 increased by 2,8% compared with November 2006, Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday. The estimated volume of electricity consumed (available for distribution) for the three months ending November 2007 increased by 3,8% compared with the three months ending November 2006.

Cape Town to challenge Eskom on load shedding

The City of Cape Town says it has asked for a top-level meeting with Eskom over power cuts and their threat to new investments. The request comes in the wake of an announcement by the utility that South Africa faces another five to seven years of electricity failures. Load shedding was to continue around the country on Thursday evening, Eskom said.

Eskom: Load shedding could extend into next week

Load shedding could be extended to the weekend and Monday if electricity demand is not reduced and the supply situation not normalised, Eskom said on Friday afternoon. Eskom said initial investigations at the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric project indicated there was a supply problem on the Mozambican side because of poor weather conditions.

Load shedding under way in Tshwane

There will be power failures in Tshwane for two to three hours per area until Eskom has sorted out its problems, the municipality said on Friday. Spokesperson Console Tleane appealed to motorists to drive carefully because of bad weather and the fact that some traffic lights would be off.

Host cities to kick off 2010 countdown

The eight 2010 Soccer World Cup host cities will hold celebrations to mark the beginning of the 1 000-day countdown to the event, the City of Tshwane said on Thursday. President Thabo Mbeki is expected to make an address at celebrations taking place at the Union Buildings on Friday — which marks exactly 1 000 days until the soccer spectacle kicks off.

Tshwane mulls firing refuse companies

The City of Tshwane was considering on Monday evening whether or not to fire companies it had hired to remove refuse. ”We are mulling over it and considering all factors,” said spokesperson Console Tleane. Letters had been handed to Milnex and Capacity over the weekend telling them to get their workers back on the job or have their contracts with the city cancelled.
