The City of Tshwane was considering on Monday evening whether or not to fire companies it had hired to remove refuse.
”We are mulling over it and considering all factors,” said spokesperson Console Tleane.
Letters had been handed to Milnex and Capacity over the weekend telling them to get their workers back on the job or have their contracts with the city cancelled.
The city’s ultimatum expired on Monday.
The city was also considering a request by Milnex to mediate talks between it and its workers, who were also South Africa Municipal Workers’ Union members. Tleane said the city was not obliged to intervene.
The 1 268 workers employed by Milnex went on strike last Monday. They wanted to be directly employed by the municipality rather than through labour brokerage companies contracted to the council.
”The denials by both companies that their workers are not on strike do not help anyone. It is clear to everyone that there has been a disruption … of the services that the companies are contracted to render,” said Tleane. – Sapa
