Confident Warriors make it to the final

The Warriors will contest the final of the MTN Domestic Championship after a comprehensive 42-run victory over the Eagles in the first of the two semifinals at Buffalo Park in East London on Friday. They now need to wait until Sunday to see whether they will play the Titans or the Cape Cobras on Wednesday in the final.

Eastern Cape to get Super 14 franchise

Fasten your seatbelts, Super 14 rugby is coming to the East and Southern Cape. It may only be in 2010 or 2011 but the regions will be represented by a team in the Super 14. This was confirmed by project manager Godfrey Afrika on Wednesday, the man tasked by the South African Rugby Union and SA Rugby to oversee the procedure.

De Voest sets up battle against Ljubicic

Fifth seed Rik de Voest won the battle of the South Africans and set up a quarterfinal clash with top seed Ivan Ljubicic at the South African Airways Tennis Open on Wednesday. De Voest lifted the level of his game from his first-round encounter to beat up-and-coming 21-year-old Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.

Ljubicic sneaks into second round at SAA Open

Top seed Ivan Ljubicic had to survive a second-set scare before putting away qualifier Lamine Ouahab of Algeria in the first round of the SAA Tennis Open at Selborne Park on Tuesday. After one hour and 40 minutes, the Croatian finally won through 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 and set up a second round encounter against Laurent Recourderc of France.

Pollock stars as West Indians wilt

Veteran South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock sent the West Indians crashing to a narrow defeat against a Makhaya Ntini Invitation XI in a rain-affected opening match of their tour at Buffalo Park on Friday. Pollock top-scored 54 off 40 balls and took one for five in three overs as the Ntini XI won by five runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Bulldogs break drought with win over Griffons

The Border Bulldogs broke their winless drought when they upset the Griffons 34-26 in their Absa Currie Cup first division match at East London’s Absa Stadium on Saturday. It was the best Bulldogs display of guts and passion the entire season and although they faced a massive onslaught from the Griffons pack after leading 27-13 at the break, their will to win saw them through.

Interest rates likely to rise, says Mboweni

South Africa’s central bank Governor Tito Mboweni said on Tuesday that above-target inflation meant that interest rates were more likely to rise than fall. South Africa’s inflation has stayed above the Reserve Bank’s target band for three months since breaching it in April, when it rose to 6,3% year-on-year.

Bulldogs, Pumas in dramatic draw

A penalty by centre Oliver Fowles five minutes into referee’s optional time earned the Border Bulldogs a dramatic 19-19 draw against the Pumas at a wet East London’s Absa Stadium on Friday night. It was a game of two halves with the visitors doing the bulk of their scoring in the first and the Bulldogs in the second.

Bulldogs scare the Lions

In a real thriller, the Border Bulldogs gave the Golden Lions a scare in their compulsory friendly rugby match at the Absa Stadium on Saturday before going down 35-31. By half-time, the Lions had built a handy 21-11 lead, scoring three converted tries to one, and after the break scored another two goals to extend the gap to 35-14.

Warriors set new records

Bad light brought play to an early end on the third day of the Supersport match between the Warriors and the Cape Cobras at Buffalo Park in East London on Saturday. At that stage the Cobras were 41 runs in arrears at 37 for one wicket in their second innings, with Benji Hector on 19 and Andrew Puttick on four not out.

Disciplined Titans down Warriors

Some tight bowling and magnificent fielding by the Titans prevented the Warriors from winning their first limited-overs match of the MTN domestic championship at Buffalo Park on Wednesday. Some economic analysts say the passion for land is dying out in modern South Africa as more rural residents move to urban areas to escape the crushing poverty that contrasts sharply with much of the country’s prosperous cities. Sundowns’ striker Manqoba Ngwenya became the hero for Mamelodi Sundowns when he scored a brace against a depleted Bush Bucks in a Premier Soccer league in East London on Wednesday night. The visitors led 1-0 at halftime. The victory sees Sundowns move to the top of the log, one point clear of Kaizer Chiefs, and they still have a game in hand.
