Second gold for Ryk Neethling

Ryk Neethling claimed his second gold of the competition on the final evening of the Telkom National Swimming Championships in East London on Saturday night. Fresh from his 100m freestyle victory on Friday night, the Olympic gold medallist surprised even himself with a speedy victory in the 50m butterfly in 23,89.

Suzaan van Biljon has once again given selectors something to think about after qualifying for the World Championships for the third time at the Telkom National Swimming Championships in East London on Wednesday night. Zondeki breaks away to Cape Town

The acting CEO of the Border Cricket Board, Greg Hayes, and Warriors coach Mickey Arthur dropped a bombshell when they announced on Wednesday that Protea express bowler Monde Zondeki has decided to pursue his career with the Western Province-Boland franchise from next summer. ”He goes with our blessing,” Hayes said.

Elephants not so mighty

The Border Bulldogs proved good value for money in their pre-season rugby friendly in East London at the Absa Stadium on Friday night, beating neighbours the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants 48-19. The Bulldogs backline looked good and while they never always got it right, ran in some fine tries to help take a 27-13 half-time lead.

Three killed by lightning in the Eastern Cape

Lightning claimed the lives of an initiate and a traditional nurse in the Cofimvaba area at the weekend, police said on Sunday. Superintendent Gcinikaya Taleni said initiate Bantom Bonga (19) and traditional nurse Salele Mbali (42) were killed when lightning struck their grass hut at Mthingwevu at about 5pm on Friday.

Payment dispute ends medical waste contract

A dispute over non-payment of the rental of a refrigerated container with medical waste inside on Wednesday caused a hospital group in East London, Afrox Healthcare, to end its medical waste-removal contract with a nationally based company. Last Friday, an electrician cut the power supply to a container in which medical waste had been stored.

Fraud charges catch up with businessman

Robin McGregor, former chief executive of well-known South African businessman Tony Cotterell’s Kempston Group, will finally face fraud charges four years after he was first arrested. McGregor is currently dealer principal of the Johannesburg-based Peugeot Commercial Centre, a division of Cotterell’s Ancott Trust.

Shack dwellers settle on school sports field

Staff and parents from a primary school in East London are up in arms after a housing committee apparently instructed a group of shack dwellers to relocate to the school’s sports field. Nompumelelo Primary School principal Nokuzola Ndabambi said trenches had been dug in the sports field and poles had been placed in the soil so that shacks could be built.

Crew airlifted from stricken tanker

A six-hour maritime drama played out along the Wild Coast when 16 seamen were airlifted off a freighter in stormy seas in the early hours of Sunday morning, the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre said. Helicopters battled 40-knot winds and three metre swells to airlift 16 crewmen off the freighter BBC China.

SABC axes weekend programmes

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has axed almost all of its weekend programmes on the radio station SAfm. Although all the presenters were informed of the decision when they were given a month’s notice at the beginning of September, the SABC has not informed the media of the changes to the weekend schedule.

Ostrich industry ‘faces collapse’

The extermination of 1 300 ostriches, that have been raised as part of an Eastern Cape black economic empowerment farming venture, started on Thursday after the birds tested positive for bird flu. All the birds are in Salem, near Grahamstown. ”The consequential loss of this will run up to R350 000 over the next three months,” said local Agri-Business managing director Martin Fick.

The appointment of Eastern Cape tourism board CEO Glenton de Kock has been put on hold after the Eastern Cape tourism board resigned en masse this weekend in protest against his appointment. However, Environmental Affairs and Tourism MEC Andre de Wet says he hopes to have a new board by the end of this month.

Prisoners still facing the noose

There are still at least seven prisoners facing the death penalty in the Eastern Cape, although the death penalty was finally written out of the law six years ago. Countrywide, there are thought to be dozens of prisoners who were sentenced to death before the abolition of the death penalty in 1995, who are still waiting for their sentences to be commuted.

Deputy mayor dies in office

The deputy mayor of Buffalo City, which includes East London, collapsed and died in his office on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said on Thursday. Colleagues heard a noise in 49-year-old Des Halley’s office at the end of a day packed with meetings, and on investigation found that he had collapsed.

Need a licence? Take a taxi to the Eastern Cape

More than half of the drivers on Eastern Cape roads do not have legal licences. Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Tshepo Machaea said on Tuesday about 530 000 of roughly one million drivers in the province had either obtained fraudulent licences by bribing departmental officials or were carrying out-of-date licences.

Ichthyology icon dies aged 97

Internationally renowned ichthyologist Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer died on Monday, aged 97. Courtenay-Latimer achieved international recognition as the discoverer of the coelacanth in 1938 when it was thought to have been extinct for 70-million years. The fish genus was named Latimeria chulumnae in her honour.

Room for improvement, say election observers

South Africa’s electoral process still faced some challenges, a report compiled by the Election Observer Mission (EOM) said on Wednesday. Most of the problems noted in the report involved inconsistent voting and counting procedures. Some ballot booths were positioned in a way that could have compromised the secrecy of the ballot, said the EOM report.
