Fifteen people were arrested for various cases of fraud amounting to more than R2,5-million in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
Superintendent Mike Fatyela said members of the joint anti-corruption task team in the province expected to arrest another 10 people during the course of the morning.
Those arrested included doctors, school principals, bank managers and directors of government departments from King William’s Town, Umtata, East London, Elliot, Bisho and Queenstown. The police said they had been investigating the cases since August.
In one case, a director in the public works department in Bisho was alleged to have awarded tenders to companies run by his sister and friends. He also allegedly took bribes from project managers to award them tenders.
In another case, social grants were awarded to non-existent children. – Sapa
