DRC experts hurry to test river for radiation

Environmental experts hurried to the south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday to test water from a river where authorities suspect 18 tonnes of radioactive minerals were dumped last week. Officials feared contamination of the river, an important source of drinking water for thousands of people in Katanga province.

Foot-and-mouth confirmed at new UK farm

Tests have confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at a third farm in south-east England this month, the Environment Ministry said on Tuesday. ”Foot-and-mouth disease has today been confirmed at the slaughter-on-suspicion premises where sheep, pigs and cattle were culled last night [Monday],” the government said in a statement.
