Kaka is simply the best

Brazil and AC Milan’s Kaka has simply been the outstanding footballer of 2007 and proved that claim by winning the Fifa player of the year award on Monday to add to his European Footballer of the Year honour. The 25-year-old Kaka starred in AC Milan’s run to the European Champions League title, then the European Super Cup and the recent Club World Cup.

Monty limps out of Perpignan debut

South Africa’s World Cup winning fullback Percy Montgomery endured a painful European Cup introduction on Saturday when he limped out of Perpignan’s 23-6 win over London Irish. Montgomery suffered a dead-leg and was substituted on the hour mark but the Bok star insisted the injury was not connected to his knee problem.

Rangers miss out on British sweep

Glasgow Rangers’ Champions League campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday when a 3-0 defeat by Lyon meant they failed to complete a British sweep of clubs into the last 16. Rangers were attempting to join city rivals Celtic as well as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the knockout stages.

Sarkozy: ‘Danger of war’ exists with Iran

French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned of a risk of a war with Iran if Israel considered its security seriously threatened by Tehran’s nuclear drive in a magazine interview to be published on Thursday. Sarkozy also said he was ready to travel to Tehran to discuss a civilian nuclear partnership if the country steps up its cooperation.

Liverpool shine on European stage

Liverpool’s habit of leaving it to the last to qualify for the important stages of big tournaments was repeated on Tuesday as they inflicted a record 4-0 home defeat on Marseille to make the knockout stage of the Champions League. Gadaffi accuses Europeans of abusing immigrants

Libyan leader Moammar Gadaffi fought back against criticism of his rights record on Tuesday by accusing European countries of abusing African immigrants. ”They brought us here like cattle to do hard and dirty work, and then they throw us to live on the outskirts of towns and when we claim our rights, the police beat us,” he said.

Five injured in Airbus test accident

Five people were injured when an Airbus A340-600 carrying out a ground engine test in France slammed into a wall, the company said on Friday in a press statement. Of those injured, three remained in hospital on Friday. Nine people were taken to hospital to be examined after the accident, which took place late on Thursday.
